DIY: Loose Fit, Long Life
The most sustainable buildings are those that last and are loved. This subsection investigated prototyping as a strategy to scale up ideas. We designed architectural prototypes that can be deployed on myriad sites, can adapt to serve evolving household and communal formations, and can change function over the generational life of buildings. We tested our prototypes on site as incremental buildings that aggregate to create a new diverse, mixed-use neighborhood on North Campus. Along the way we challenged conventional forms of housing and notions of family. Most importantly we aspired to create buildings that are beautiful and form communities that people will cherish.
