EARTHY
EARTHY explores home as the foundational architecture of care for all of earth’s earthlings. Sited along the river in Detroit’s Gold Coast – a paddle away from Belle Isle – EARTHY approaches dwelling as the interaction with, connection to and fostering of local biodiversity, climate and each other.
EARTHY studio designs a regenerative urban housing district that addresses the neighborhood’s immediate housing, environmental and urban needs, while seeking more. Participants confront their agency as designers in reversing significant disturbances created by the building industry towards housing projects that foster healthy habitats through careful consideration of landscape and building relationships, restorative programming, circular systems design and the use of bioregional, regenerative materials.
Alternative practices and lifestyles are encouraged and uplifted in both studio collective and project proposals, as long as they strive for inclusivity, health, circularity and kinship.
As a studio, we create an EARTHY CATALOG of bio-regional, circular, architectural materials and systems for collective use, we upcycle found materials into doll-sized models for living, explore precedents that care for and encourage thriving relationships, and tread existing Detroit housing habitats and landscapes.
