Situated at the intersection of Joy Road and Artesian on Detroit's west side, the AGORO Market is conceived as a celebration of play and public life. The project responds to a site that becomes vibrant on Tuesday market days yet remains an empty parking lot the rest of the week.
The design acts as an enabler of community interaction, creating a vibrant and accessible market where users across ages can thrive and engage in different types of physical activity. Play mounds provide contained free play, breaking from the conventions of fixed equipment and enriching the public market landscape. The landscape echoes the temporal nature of goods carried and sold on head pans in West African markets throughout the day. AGORO ultimately celebrates exuberance and shared public space.
