Market Zero


The past two centuries have been marked by rapid change not within a fixed and stable world, but within a world transformable, and transformed. From industrialization to the information age, global trade to global warming, the world has been re-shaped in ways both deliberate and unintentional.

The public market remains a space of negotiation, outside the algorithm, and especially resilient in an age when one can purchase anything from anywhere. How might we expand the role of this typology as a nexus of exchange?

The studio will design a new public market space in Detroit’s Eastern Market in order to explore the relationship between interiority, exteriority, and interstitiality.
