Beneath The Surface

Nestled along Chicago's State Street Corridor, "Beneath the Surface" connects to the origins of the Chicago Stock Exchange to envision a new carbon market institution that promotes carbon sequestration in building materials. Public exhibition spaces on the lower levels house installations of carbon sequestering materials. Workshops above support experimentation with carbon products. The building form itself expresses the use of carbon sequestering materials including straw bale insulation, carbon dioxide injected plaster, and mass timber.

"Beneath The Surface" serves as a space for the public to collaborate and learn more upon carbon based materials and an icon for a resilient sustainable future in reducing carbon emissions through carbon sequestration.
