S. Wells Workshop sits on the corner of Wells and Washington in Chicago’s La-Salle district. Readapting a parking tower into a hybrid trade school, residence, and public park, this tower positions Chicago to make and adapt their environment. The trade school demands workshops, tool libraries, classrooms, and material shops which can stay open beyond class hours to the public. This tower’s adaptive reuse preserves the memory of materials, and the program of the mechanical space prior, acknowledging the best adaptations heavily learn from their predecessors. This project treats salvage as preservation, not extraction.
